Cold lava floods from Mount Semeru have caused severe damage to several bridges in Lumajang Regency, East Java, on Friday.

The Kali Regoyo suspension bridge and the connecting bridge between Lumajang and Malang were reportedly destroyed by the flow of cold lava from Mount Semeru. “At the Regoyo Gondoruso River bridge, the water level has increased significantly, causing it to overflow onto the bridge,” said Pasirian Police Chief Agus Sugiharto in Lumajang.

They have also prohibited people from crossing the bridge due to the potential mixture of materials in the cold lava from Mount Semeru.

We prohibit two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles from crossing as the situation is still experiencing moderate rainfall,” he said.

Several amateur videos capturing the moment when cold lava floods hit several bridges have gone viral on social media and through chain messages on WhatsApp among Lumajang residents.

In addition to the cold lava floods from Mount Semeru, Lumajang Regency has also been hit by landslides at several points. According to Lumajang Regency’s Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the most severe landslide occurred in the Piket Nol area, precisely at KM 58 in Sumberwuluh Village, Candipuro District.

The landslide has caused the Lumajang-Malang traffic through the southern route to be temporarily closed until the evacuation process is completed. The Curah Kobokan route also cannot be passed yet due to the ongoing strong flow of cold lava from Mount Semeru. “The landslide occurred around the Perak Bridge, precisely at KM 58. Two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles cannot pass through,” said Nur Cahyo from Lumajang Regency’s BPBD Operations Center (Pusdalops).

The Lumajang Regency BPBD’s TRC team, assisted by the Transportation Agency, the Public Order Agency, the TNI-Polri, and several volunteers, are currently conducting handling operations. “The landslide is still ongoing, the soil condition is still unstable, we are still waiting for conditions that allow us to proceed,” he said. Meanwhile, a landslide also occurred in Sumberurip Village, Pronojiwo District, Lumajang Regency, resulting in three fatalities.

One family was buried by the landslide, and the authorities have successfully evacuated the bodies of the three victims.
